Some weeks ago, Larry Gaaga set the internet on fire when he released his hit track “Egedege.” The song which was produced by Masterkraft seemed like nostalgia for any lover of Igbo genres of music. More importantly was the featuring of the goddess of Egedege music, Theresa Onuorah.
In the 80s and 90s, Theresa Onuorah was one of the strongest forces to reckon with on the entertainment scene in South-East, Nigeria. So huge was her popularity that many people were ready to walk any distance just to watch her perform.
But over the years, the popularity of Egedege seemed to have declined rapidly. And people were only remembering the music with nostalgia.
For sometime, Theresa Onuorah was rarely seen performing at events, and this made many to start asking questions about her. Some wondered if she was still singing at all.
So after years of silence from her, Larry Gaaga brought her back to the consciousness of music lovers with his song “Egegege”, and it was refreshing to hear her sonorous voice again.
Egedege is one of the most popular traditional dances in Igbo land, and it is lovely to see Larry Gaaga bringing it to the mainstream of music in Nigeria. And what even made the song more unique is how he brought Theresa Onuorah, because when we think of Egedege, her name is what immediately comes into our mind.
